The other day I was out to dinner with my family. We were sitting in the outdoor portion of the restaurant when this guy in a stormtrooper outfit came walking down the alley. It wasn’t any special day, no big event that I could think of, and he just walked up and everyone took pictures and some kids gave him some high-fives.
He went to one kid to get a high-five but the kid wouldn’t do it, the guy laughed kind of awkwardly and did some funny poses and moved on. I took his picture and told him he was awesome and he walked off and into a parking garage. I spent the rest of the dinner just thinking about that experience.
There’s something so strangely honest about putting on that costume. Sure, it’s weird to think that he could just do that for fun, but the illusion totally works. He walks around, everyone is amazed, he gets highfives from strangers, people take his picture and none of it is about him it’s just about being this character and performer. After that he goes home feeling good about himself, puts the costume away and continues with his life. And all of us remember it as a funny experience. It’s great!
